Beyond the Comfort Zone

Recognising & managing unconscious biases in the helping professions

As practitioners in the area of healthcare and education , having been trained and educated in empathy and unconditional positive acceptance, we might believe that we are free of prejudices and bias. We might also think that we have such an "open" mind that we can welcome all aspects of our clients/students/patients.

But is that really the case?

While it is reassuring and pleasant to feel part of a category that has no prejudices, this is a dangerous assumption that can negatively influence the helping relationship. The more unaware we may be of these prejudices and biases, the greater this risk.

In this experiential workshop, we will explore the biases and prejudices that we may unwittingly hold, and how we can use this awareness to improve the quality of relationships with our clients/ patients/students, in order to offer them more authentic and effective support.

We will also see how our biases/ prejudices in relation to our work can inhibit our professional and personal growth and how awareness of their existence can become a powerful tool for change.

In particular, we will explore any prejudices we may have in relation to gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and whatever is considered "different".
