In all of us there is an unexpressed potential, a possible 'future' that presses to manifest itself through our thoughts and actions. As helping practitioners, we know that this potential rarely manifests itself.autonomously. Often, in fact, the potential needs external support, a friendly, non-judgmental gaze to reveal itself. As Rogers said, we need 'unconditional positive acceptance' to be able to express ourselves in a way that is respectful of our true nature.
To be able to offer this kind of support, as helping relationship practitioners, we need to recognise the ideas, expectations and prejudices we have about the people we support and understand how these can help (or hinder) their educational, rehabilitative or therapeutic journey. Only in this way can we change these thoughts, expectations and prejudices and offer the benevolent and non-judgmental gaze that can help them express their unexpressed potential.
In this theoretical-practical workshop, drawing on the theory and practice of Psychosynthesis and on the socio-psychological studies of Rosenthal, Zimbardo and Merton, we will explore together how to address and modify some of the mechanisms by which we unconsciously can hinder, promote or distort the expression of our clients' potential.
