Preparing for Change

How to facilitate Change in the helping relationships

Change is the goal of the work of  many helping relationships.

However, we often come up against the frustration that it does not happen. Or it happens but not in the way we thought.

Many times, in fact, we rush to try to help the people who come to us without spending enough time and attention to prepare clients (and ourselves) for the process of change.

Thus, starting from the assumption that the phase of preparation for change is a crucial moment in the helping relationship, this seminar aims to provide participants with strategies and tools to help clients approach change proactively.

During the seminar, the following topics will be covered:

  • Defining 'readiness' for change and the role of motivation: how much does the person in front of us want to change?
  • Preparing for change and its implications.
  • Setting goals and preparing for setbacks
  • "I want to change without change": Overcoming initial resistance to change
  • The relationship that changes and the relationship that heals: what are the relational ingredients that create the conditions for change

This highly experiential workshop will draw on the principles of psychosynthesis, Rogers' client-centred therapy, Prochaska and Diclemente's transtheoretical model of change, and John Whitmore's GROW model of coaching.

The seminar "Preparing for Change" is part of the "Care Academy - Nurturing Change", a training course on Change promoted by the Associazione Sul Sentiero di Firenze. The full programme can be found on the Association's website www.associazionesulsentiero.it
